North Athletic Complex

Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA

The new Athletic Complex features four all-weather turf Baseball fields. Two full size Basketball courts and two all-weather turf soccer fields. The entire complex is lighted for any night time activity.

The Athletic Complex had an issue with putting in a retention pond which would diminish the amount of field area that was needed. The solution for this problem was pervious concrete. This pavement technology creates more efficient land use by eliminating the need for retention ponds, swales, and other storm water management devices. In doing so, pervious concrete has the ability to lower overall project costs on a first-cost basis. By capturing storm water and allowing it to seep into the ground, porous concrete is instrumental in recharging groundwater, reducing storm water runoff, and meeting U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) storm water regulations. In fact, the use of pervious concrete is amount the Best Management Practices (BMP’s) recommended by the EPA – and by other agencies and geotechnical engineers across the county – the for management of storm water runoff on a regional and local basis.

The complex concrete paving is made of 62,000 square feet of pervious concrete. 74,000 square feet of Broom finish concrete paving. Along with two full size color stained concrete Baseball courts and 4,000 square feet of colored stamped concrete entrances.

Pervious concrete was sustainable solution and was compatible with the environment for the Athletic Center because; it eliminates runoff of untreated storm water, directly recharges mimics the drainage and filtration of natural soils and bioswales, provides drip line irrigation for urban trees and landscaping, reduces surfaces temperatures, and eliminates the need for expensive collecting and detention ponds.
